"Left-wing outlets have normalized of Covid too, dismissing or even ostracizing people who still take precautions as conspiracy theorists. 'We can’t be in lockdown forever,' has become a common refrain, as if wearing a mask on the subway equals 'lockdown'” https://newrepublic.com/article/177849/biden-democrats-covid-pandemic-2024
Democrats Can’t Keep Ignoring Covid in 2024

A sudden surge of the virus is a stark reminder of two things: The pandemic isn’t over, and it could be part of the referendum on the Biden presidency.

@taylorlorenz

Meh. Just like the flu .. if you have it, stay the f*** home.

@cowboyminer @taylorlorenz it is quite literally nothing like the flu. Covid killed more people in the first few weeks of the year than the flu does all year and has disabled millions in ways the flu could never. The flu is a respiratory virus. Covid is an airborne vascular and neurological disease that destroys ur immune system. For god’s sake educate yourself. Ppl like u treating it like the flu is why disabled ppl are shut out of public life rn

@cowboyminer @taylorlorenz I get over the flu in a matter of hours, maybe a day at worst. Last time I was exposed to COVID was in January and I still can't run a block without getting asthma for over an hour.

It's entirely distinct.

@skotchygut

I should have been more clear. My intent was to say that mitigating is like the flu. Vaccinate, stay home, wear a mask, see a doc if need be.

Like with the flu.

@taylorlorenz I saw your reply. You're an interesting "journalist".

@taylorlorenz
Sadly true in both the US and UK...

Very little coverage of the real short and longterm risks from infection (brain damage, heart problems etc), and no support for those either immuno-compromised or with long covid...

Only the Green Party in the UK has made a commitment to cleaner air so far...

@taylorlorenz I do not think people are normalizing it. People want to get on with their lives and there is nothing wrong with that. There is I think an ethics behind the regulations which are to give guidelines on how people should treat things as to live a rather normal life. There is more to just “normalizing”
@taylorlorenz The provincial government of BC Canada has not distributed any new covid test kits to replace the ones that expired last year. Even pharmacies to not have any.
@taylorlorenz reading this while wearing a respirator in a cab home from the pub. There are still some of us taking it seriously, but it's always so depressing reading things like this seeing how normalised doing absolutely nothing has become.
@taylorlorenz Community-minded leftists need to jettison the highest idealism-- in this case, and others -- and look to what is possible. People are not going to be kept in masks. They'll throw out those who try to impose them. People don't much want to hear about COVID anymore, either. Irrational? Sure, you bet. Welcome to the public sphere! This is an evolutionary process. Not all evolutionary processes can be thwarted by politics.
