Not-really-cached US Kindle giveaways. Yes, plural -- two books: Metaplanetary and Superluminal, by Tony Daniel. These are weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd books: the setting is a solar system-wide society with... all of the planets connected by giant cables. Huge cables. That have space for physical objects, data cables, and computronium.

The society is full of all sorts of people -- biological and virtual. One of the families is a biological man and a virtual woman. They have children.

And then fascism starts happening. There is real, horrible evil in the books. ugh.

And then it ends. Clearly a third one was supposed to happen, but it never did. Just enjoy the weiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd ride.

I wonder what happened to the author.

@kithrup

One of the families is a biological man and a virtual woman. They have children..... wait, wtf? Damn. Most realistic waifu EVER.

@zakalwe The virtual people are actual people, just not biological.
@kithrup it seems he writes for the right wing online website The Federalist. This website is very much a propaganda machine funded by right wing nutsos: https://www.exposedbycmd.org/2021/06/15/revealed-the-federalist-foundations-tax-records/ and apparently publishes downright racist articles about “black crime”. According to his website the author has not published anything since 2021 though, so who knows what happened. These novels were published almost 20 years ago so I wouldn’t wait for a third one.
REVEALED: The Federalist Foundation's Tax Records - EXPOSEDbyCMD

The right-wing website took in $800,000 in 2019, some of it from extremist megadonors.
