A Russian Dissident’s Remarkable Courtroom Speech

Following a grim tradition, a brave Russian human-rights advocate speaks out before being sent to prison.

At the end, he addressed the judge and the court officials:
"I am speaking to you, your honor, and the others accusing me: Are you yourselves not afraid? Are you not afraid to watch what our country is becoming, our country that you, too, probably love? Are you not afraid that not only you, but also your children and, God forbid, your grandchildren, will have to live in this absurdity, this dystopia?"
@anneapplebaum "Do you not acknowledge the obvious truth, that the repressive machine will sooner or later also flatten those who launched it and promoted it? This has happened many times in history..." This astonishes me, that those who admire Mussolini and Hitler seem not to see how those two monsters ended up. It takes little time to read about the horrifying ways those two met their deaths. The Nazi propagandist Goebbels and his wife poisoned all their children and then poisoned themselves. Do fascists today really not know about this and learn from it?

To say nothing of the vast destruction caused to the world.
@anneapplebaum I saw just this bit at first and thought, Oh god, are they letting Trump talk in court again? It's remarkable the way Trump turns every accusation against him on its head and turns it against others: "crime family," "rigged election," "corrupt judges," etc.
@anneapplebaum Today France and Moldova signed a mutual defense pact. Very interesting implications from that move. Finally, some of Europe is beginning to play chess. Putin has been playing the game for a long time while much of the democratic world, including the United States House of Representatives, has played checkers. Or not been in the game at all.
