various vendor software right now
@LunaRogue what happened
@lunacb @LunaRogue Leap day bugs are an incredibly common bug in software and can cause problems like incorrect timestamping and expiry dates
@LunaRogue @Moosader I saw something about an EA game crashing on startup today. The workaround is to manually change the date to March 1.

@LunaRogue

Real men use only Unix time and UTC.

@LunaRogue About 10 years ago I had to fix a custom accounting software that was written by someone who apparently believed that all months had 30 days.
@LunaRogue @Gargron considering the number of end-of-month emails I received a day early… ya
@LunaRogue Just recently, I wrote kind of a bug report to my bank because there literally is a "February 30th" on my bank statement of 2023.
@LunaRogue @Gargron in Paris, lights in the streets was turned off at midnight (from Wednesday to Thursday) due to software issue! No data for 29Feb 😂 https://www.leparisien.fr/paris-75/paris-pourquoi-les-rues-de-la-capitale-ont-ete-plongees-dans-le-noir-la-nuit-derniere-29-02-2024-H2EHOGKJ2VE5DIU4FZTDMZMDGA.php
Paris : pourquoi les rues de la capitale ont été plongées dans le noir la nuit dernière

Une grande partie de l’éclairage public de la capitale a été éteint durant plusieurs heures dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi. Explications.

@LunaRogue Wait, how tf can software not account for February 29th? I've heard that a launcher from one of the big game companies fucked up because of that, and now the same issue is happening to other software?

@LunaRogue @Gargron one of our applications has a default search date range of one year, which it apparently does advancing the “year” value by one and carrying the same month and day value over.

so the default search parameters today are:
2/29/2024 to 2/29/2025
…which returns an error because 2/29/2025 isn’t a date.

IT had to issue a memo this morning telling all employees they have to set a custom date range, because the default will not work.
