New York appeals judge denies Trump bid to pay $100m of $454m judgment

Ex-president’s lawyers had asked court to halt collection of rest of amount plus ban on securing new loans from New York banks

@JamesGleick Is debtor's prison a thing in the US?

@stevenixon @JamesGleick

Technically abolished by Congress in the 1800s, but of course private debt collectors have found ways to circumvent that.

@stevenixon @JamesGleick Under some circumstances, yes. This is not one of them.
@drwho Shame, it would be very amusing
@JamesGleick Or he could come up with it, he just refuses to do it.
@shawngoldwater @JamesGleick
He knows he will lose everything he gives now so he's trying to get it from someone else. That's why he complains he can't get a loan.
@JamesGleick He still thinks he can negotiate his way out of this. Art of the schlemiel.
@Barbramon1 @JamesGleick
Trump is not a negotiator. He makes unreasonable demands and uses every means available to pressure the other party into submission.
@JamesGleick Cue world’s tiniest violin.
@JamesGleick Of course he can't. He's leveraged way up over his eyeballs. Even if he tries to sell an asset, banks are going to be collecting what they're owed before he gets the 15 cents of actual equity he has.
@JamesGleick like he ever showed mercy to all the creditors he stiffed
@JamesGleick
If he can inflate MaraLago to $1B+ and his square footage by 3x, why can't he just inflate his cash to cover the judgment?
