Also, I was just complaining to someone the other day that at the time of your life when you can appreciate top-end hifi you can't afford it, and when you can afford it (relatively speaking) your hearing's so shot it's not worth it!

I've settled for higher-end personally, but I occasionally encounter folks who have spent more on their hi-fi gear than I've ever spent on anything ever and I can appreciate the (very expensive) subtleties...

@iamwahl I've encountered those folk ... and I can't. 🙂
(Mates have switched in and out valve pre-amp circuits and grinned like a new parent, in the mistaken assumption that I could identify any difference whatsoever.)
Some differences I can hear, though, I will admit. (e.g. proper speakers over old laptops)

I too enjoy the subtleties of $250+ bottles of wine, but I don't have the vocabulary to describe them!
