I don’t need a Vaio P, I don’t need a Vaio P, I don’t need a Vaio P, I don’t...
@gameboycamera Out of curiosity, why not an MNT Pocket Reform? (This isn't my favorite MNT product so I'm unlikely to get one in the short term, but it seems to be in a ~similar form factor doesn't it?)
@oceane oooo, I hadn’t seen this before! It’s quite a cute little laptop! Hmmmmmmmmmmm
@gameboycamera @cwebber (an ActivityPub co-editor) has bought one “to have a purse-sized laptop”
@oceane @cwebber @gameboycamera The Vaio looks so much better though. But I do carry a gpd pocket 2 in my purse 😅
@h5e @cwebber @gameboycamera Hmm I haven't looked up its specs; I crave for MNT's modularity and sustainability, and honestly, the Pyra minicomputer is closer to my price range (but ugly as sin)

@oceane @cwebber @gameboycamera there are a few different trims (also I think there’s a successor now). It’s already a few years old but it does okay for some web browsing or light gaming.
@h5e @gameboycamera Excuse me but I'm confused, are you talking about the Pyra?
@oceane @gameboycamera no, I was talking about the gpd pocket 2 (https://www.gpd.hk/gpdpocket2)

@h5e @gameboycamera That looks cool, it reminds me of the Gemini PDA, an Android device which is (or was) officially supported by Sailfish OS
@oceane @gameboycamera Yeah that’s a pretty cool device too!
@h5e @gameboycamera The reviews are good, but honestly I couldn't even buy one handheld device; this one would probably be my favorite in this price range though.

There's also
the Beepy which is even cheaper, so of course that depends on what you're looking for – this looks like a cool ultraportable Emacs device to be honest.

@oceane @gameboycamera I wanted some more common hardware for longevity so that’s why I picked the gpd back then. Although I didn’t have much luck installing a linux flavour, the “official” distribution was already out of date when I got mine and a newer one had all kind of driver issues so it runs Windows 11 currently. Undoubtedly the linux situation will be a bit better now but I’m okay with windows for now.
@oceane @gameboycamera but admittedly it’s a significant expense for what in the end kind of boils down to a frivolity for me
@h5e @gameboycamera I depends on your income; an MNT Pocket Reform feels like a frivolity to me, but I still crave for one, lol
@oceane @gameboycamera Well yeah of course, some people can drop that kind of money ten times over and not notice it but €1000 isn’t impulse buy territory for most, including me (the gpd was a little more affordable at €750-800, and at some point the craving won 😬). And the machine has limited applicability for most people (hence me calling it a frivolity).
@h5e @gameboycamera It is an impulse buy, thinking about it gives me gender euphoria, but I'm gonna have to spare money for about an entire year to get one. Still an impulse purchase tbh
@oceane @gameboycamera maybe we’re operating with different definitions of “impulse buy”. To clarify, with that I mean something one buys on an impulse. Like see it, like it, buy it. If one has to mull things over a bit, have a serious think about where to get the money from, maybe save up even, it’s not buying it on an impulse. So when I see a nice purse for €30 and buy it it’s an impulse buy, if I see a nice laptop to put in it that costs more than my monthly mortgage and I have to save up my disposable income for a few months to be able to afford it, it’s not. (In all this I’m assuming somewhat sensible financial decisions and not buying things one doesn’t need and can’t afford).
@h5e Sorry it was a joke on monotropism, I'm autistic
@h5e @gameboycamera Honestly I've hosted a domestic predator and he would use my ThinkPad T60; he got used to Fedora/i3 because he could run more programs at once, and it wouldn't heat up the room.
