Mastodon v4.2.8 has just been released.

On this release Mastodon changes the default registration mode to being closed. Meaning that if you have never changed the registration mode for your server, it will be closed by default.

Also, it introduces a feature that will "automatically require approval for new registrations in the absence of moderators". Meaning that if no user with moderation permission has accessed the server in one week, the registration mode changes to require manual approval.

So, I would recommend you check your registration mode after the upgrade is installed.

I will be starting the installation on Mastodon soon and this will cause about 15 seconds of downtime.

Also after the upgrade you will notice that you now have the option to enable hCaptcha on your server registration (Administration->Server Settings->Registrations) as I am testing it hCaptcha Pro to be included on all Masto.host plans.

To be clear hCaptcha Pro is optional and if you don't enable it, it's the same as not having hCaptcha on the server.

Regarding the difference between hCaptcha Pro and hCaptcha Free. It's that the Pro versions offers what they call "No CAPTCHA 99,9%" on the vast majority of requests. Meaning most of the time there will be no challenge presented https://www.hcaptcha.com/pro

If you already had requested hCaptcha on your server and want to change to the now included hCaptcha pro, please contact me.

Professional Plan

hCaptcha Pro dynamically adjusts difficulty from No-CAPTCHA to Hard as needed, providing a low friction experience and maximizing your conversion and engagement.

Quick reminder for anyone that isn't aware:
Just know that blind/low vision people have trouble with Hcaptcha. Even though they claim their software is "accessible".
See documentation:

For some people, the use of a central CAPTCHA service may be a security and privacy concern. In addition, CAPTCHA can make the registration process significantly less accessible, particularly for individuals with visual impairments, such as those who are blind or have low vision.

@thibaultmol I agree, turning registration to require manual approval without any Captcha is a much better solution.
@mastohost @thibaultmol I was glad to see the notice that you've provided next to the setting to enable hCaptcha. ๐Ÿ‘
