Shuriken (手裏剣 lit. 'hidden hand blade') came in many different shapes.
Samurai commonly carried 'bō shuriken' (棒手裏剣 'stick shuriken'), rather than the more familiar star-shaped ones, as these could kill in the right hands. 'Ninja stars' were intended more as a distraction.
This morning I came across a selection of 'bō shuriken' (棒手裏剣 'stick shuriken') in the storeroom. Commonly carried by samurai, rather than ninja, you can see that they come in all shapes and sizes.
