Opinion: ZEV mandate runs counter to true sustainability

Loading the future used car market with greater numbers of electric vehicles will have disastrous consequences for used values, says Simon Harris, head of valuations at UK Vehicle Data.

@CrackedWindscreen @simonharris while battery tech continues to improve I’m starting to think that solid state is the next autonomous cars - always 5 years away.
@stuffaboutcars @CrackedWindscreen Fortunately, they will not be prevented by legislative issues or disputes about liability in the case of crashes and injury, so they should arrive on schedule. They’re already in the next-gen product plans of some OEMs.

@simonharris @stuffaboutcars @CrackedWindscreen half the articles I read say they are the silver bullet and that they’re coming in the next year or two. The other half say there’s still a huge amount of work to do before they can be put into production.

There’s also plenty of reasons for manufacturers who are not currently strong in EVs to trumpet their next gen tech.

I’ll remain open-minded for now.

@stuffaboutcars @CrackedWindscreen I haven’t read any articles so you’ve got me there. I am under NDA about what I know though.
@simonharris @stuffaboutcars @CrackedWindscreen re your point on sustainability have they confirmed that their solid state batteries are fully recyclable? My current reading suggests they can’t be recycled at all at this point.
@stuffaboutcars @CrackedWindscreen NDA, Joe. But Fleet News seemed to think my point in sustainability was made regarding oversupply of high-end EVs that the used car market wouldn’t have capacity for, and which will be increased by law iver the next six years. It was the one I was trying to make at least. Solid state batteries were very much on the fringe of the point I was making.
