How to dethrone Youtube:

Phase 1:
1. Let Peertube make their mobile apps
2. Fork their mobile apps and add Youtube as a source. Similar to
NewPipe.
3. Redirect seemlessly within the apps where possible to the Peertube version. Similar to the
Peertube Companion browser extension
4.This will slowly grow Peertube market share and help accumulate more creators

Phase 2:
1. Youtube begins to block certain functionality required to make these apps work, similar to what Twitter/Reddit did with 3rd-party stuff. This should act as a signal to others that they're scared of Peertube and that it is a viable alternative to Youtube.
2. Peertube can begin to actually compete on a feature level. In this case the decider will be creator features. Things like integrations with donation platforms, moderation and quality of life features.

@slumberingcat sounds unrealistic in the sense that monetization is a huge part of YouTube's appeal for creators, but dream big.
@scirave What are all the monetisation options on Youtube:

- Ads
- Channel Members
- Asking for Donations
- Sponsorships

Am I missing anything?

- There's no built in donation platform into Peertube but you can send password-locked videos to send to members on Patreon.
- Sponsorships have expanded reach on Peertube as you can sponsor the instance itself.

So really you're only missing Ads no? And I don't think there's any technical reason why that couldn't be implemented.

@slumberingcat YouTube has operated on a loss for decades afaik. So the idea that PeerTube can enter that position just by adding ads leaves me skeptical.

Part of the issue is that adoption isn't as simple as providing an app. People use what they are used to. And I think you'll be hard pressed to get advertisers to jump on board from the get-go.

Then there's the stigma against ads (for good reason) in the FOSS community; this would be protested

Not impossible, just highly implausible.

@scirave 1. Peertube is federated so not any one person/entity is eating that loss. Much like how Mastodon works as a replacement for Twitter.

2. I'm anti-ads myself, and it's not my main focus :p, but I appreciate at least providing the option to instances and then to creators on instances that allow ads. I personally think switching to a donation based ecosystem makes the most sense.

3. Peertube isn't about recreating Youtube 1 for 1. I'm not sure anyone would appreciate random 10-hour loop videos for example taking up storage space.

4. Peertube is peer 2 peer (both in data and transcoding) and it reduces load on servers as viewers scale. You can see their
stress test results here.

5. Peertube does unlock other routes for creators. Creators can band together and create their own
Nebula for example.

6. I agree it's implausible but that's better than the typical mindset of impossible.

@slumberingcat What I'm doing is this:

1. Upload new content of my own on PeerTube, a first video preferably.
2. Upload that same first video on YouTube 6 days later.
3. Every further videos I make, I upload them to PeerTube weekly.
4. Those same further videos I make, I upload them to YouTube every 4 weeks.

So, if people want to enjoy videos with no ads, no tracks, and in a weekly basis, they can go to PeerTube. But if they want to enjoy videos with ads, tracks and every other shit, and in a monthly basis, they can do nothing.
@IgnacioCG I imagine it helps keeping a algorithm friendly schedule on Youtube as well. Not that I imagine you care all too much about that 😃

For anybody else reading this Peertube does have a
sync option that allows you to import your Youtube videos to Peertube.
