the free software movement has always eschewed the term "open source" since it was popularized by Eric Raymond.
further, Lemmy is developed by the admins of the flagship instance lemmy.ml who are avowed communists.
if you don't know what you're talking about about, you can just keep your mouth shut.
You should read these posts by the creators of Lemmy
First points out that lemmy.ml is not the flagship. Second goes through that lemmy was not intended to be left, but was intended to just not be US focused. I am okay with that but if the suggestion is that Lemmy needs to maintain leftist ideologies throughout the FOSS communities then that’s just wrong. If I get proven wrong and you can prove that these communities need to be leftist anti capitalist then I would be happy to close my Lemmy account asap.
Recently there seems to be some of misunderstanding what the lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] instance is about, especially from newer users. Lemmy.ml [http://Lemmy.ml] has always been a niche site, and it will most likely stay this way. We don’t have any intentions to turn it into a mainstream instance, or set a goal of getting as many users as possible. Our goal is simple: make an instance that people like to use. I would say that we have been successful in this, but obviously it is impossible to satisfy everyone. The reason for this is that @dessalines and I are paid to develop Lemmy, while donations from lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] users only make up a negligible part of our income. Besides, having more users would force us to spend more time moderating, and less time for development. Lemmy works quite differently from big tech sites like Reddit in this regard: while they get more money with each extra user through advertising, for us it is the opposite. So we would much rather have a smaller, non-toxic, and friendly userbase, than a large one. Part of the problem might be that lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] is described as “flagship instance”, which can certainly be interpreted to mean “mainstream” or “general purpose”. I struggle to come up with a better, more accurate description. If you can think of one, please comment here. If you dont like the way lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] works, thats okay. Federation exists exactly to solve that problem, let different groups have their own instances, with their own rules and political views. You can see the list of existing instances, and instructions for setting up a new one on join-lemmy.org [https://join-lemmy.org/]. In particular, I would like to see someone (or a group of people) create a mainstream, or liberal instance. That should help to avoid further drama, and avoid attempts to turn lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] into something that it is not. @dessalines and I would certainly be willing to help with any technical problems that such an instance runs into, and include it on join-lemmy.org [https://join-lemmy.org/] (just like any other instance that meets the code of conduct).
XD
Updooted! Le heckin funny M’Sir. Tips fedora
I’ll say it again though. If you can prove to me that Lemmy in it’s entirety needs to maintain a leftist focus then I will delete my account. You can be the one to do that Bigmouth. I will even post my hog before I leave as is tradition.
more appeal to ridicule
> prove to me that Lemmy in it’s entirety needs to maintain a leftist focus
no one is saying that. i'm saying you knew what you were getting (or you know now), and whining isn't going to change it or make anyone sympathetic.
So is your answer
A. Lemmy is inherently leftist therefore I need to not expect otherwise
B. I need to stop whining, this is how FOSS works
C. All of the above
Is this correct?
mostly a
I'm not going to tell you you need to stop whining, I'm just saying it is probably falling on deaf ears at best, and likely is actively bothering some. but you do what you want.
have you never organized with leftists? i was in one organization that formed in 2020 that, by early 2021 was two DIFFERENT organizations (both abandoning even the old name) (lets call them "b" and "c"), and then c splintered, and became c and d, then c splintered again and became c and e. as far as i know, b doesn't exist at all anymore, nor does c or d. there was one more splintering that took place within c, leading to an organization f. but for a few moments, we were all gloriously at each others' throats.
so, to answer your question, i don't know the particulars of their schisms, but i'm sure that they have good reason.
major edit:
i just want to say while group c had a lot of good theory and experience organizing, group b was the best of us, and all they did was look out for each other. they might not have had analysis, but they did the fucking work. the rest of us were committed marxists and anarchists, and that fact got in the way of doing real work. pour one out for the people who did the work.
>if the suggestion is that Lemmy needs to maintain leftist ideologies throughout the FOSS communities then that’s just wrong
i wouldn't say that. i don't think anyone did say that. but if you're going to whine about leftist content in those communities, i don't think you're going to find much sympathy, and i don't think you really deserve any, either.
