The BBC extends its Mastodon experiment for another six months: "We are also planning to start some technical work into investigating ways to publish BBC content more widely using ActivityPub." #Technology https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2024-02-extending-our-mastodon-social-media-trial?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon
Extending our Mastodon social media trial

An update reflecting on 6 months of our trial in the federated social media space

BBC R&D
@ben Hopefully that means hooking their WordPress blogs to the Fediverse!

@ben Its a really positive read. Would be great to see all staff with official BBC handles, a bit more trust.

I would imagine if they look the leap other orgs would follow.

@ben It amazes me how quickly and thoughtlessly the BBC have opened social media accounts over the years, and yet on Mastodon, where they have full control of their own server, it takes months and months of careful testing and experimentation.
@notnixon @ben I'd imagine they're trying to workout how much person-power is needed to run the server and moderate the comments.

This is actually how the BBC reacted to the Internet existing as a whole. They opened up special subject-interest sites around things like the budget (really!) and elections, and Diana's death, beginning in 1994, but didn't launch bbc news online until early 1998:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/special/politics97/budget97/
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/special/politics97/diana/
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/special/politics97/

the others from 1995-96 died in the late 2000s but you can find them here http://www.currybet.net/cbet_blog/2005/04/budget-95-on-bbccouk.php

BBC Budget 97

@starfrost @ben oh wow that’s interesting. It’s amazing how collective minds filled in the blanks in their history.

@ben

BBC is a festering sore of lies and Propaganda, its Idiot appointed CEO is a money bags, a funder of Tories, gave hundreds of thousands of pounds to the now far right Conservative Party.

Sunack, the self-serving dim bulb who is con PM made a PERSONAL/FAMILY business deal worth a Billion pounds with an oil company, then opened more of the North Sea to oil drilling.

Fecal.

Whether or not you like the BBC per se, boost this to encourage them and all other media organizations to set up their own instances and get federated!

@ben they should make all their podcasts compatible with the Podcasting 2.0 standard, and then distribute that via the fediverse. https://podcasting2.org/
Podcasting 2.0 - Making podcasts better for everyone!

Learn about the podcast innovations and features of Podcasting 2.0 for audiences, podcasters, and developers; and how to upgrade your podcast for modern benefits.

@ben very happy to hear that although I cannot recall seeing anything from them in my feed. I wish they would just start publishing their BBC News stories here - even if it is just BBC World News that would be huge.
@ben
They need to put more tags on their posts to make them filterable. I don't care about *all* sports all the time.
