The Mastodon instance “queer.af” has been shut down… by the Taliban. No, not a joke, what country do you think “.af” is? Be careful with your cc TLD's, folks.
@timbray Some more info here. Used a couple of totally great TLDs. https://t.ly/VbpyJ https://exe.io/MQkn2NW

Hello fellow admins! It would help users migrating from queer.af if you would temporarily add the following to /etc/hosts:65.108.48.233 queer.af The domain was suspended this morning without warning...

@timbray @nelson that second link you posted seems… weird

@nelson Please don't use random or sketchy link shorteners, post only the full link please (all links on Mastodon always use 23 characters of a post's length limit regardless of how long the link actually is, making link shorteners completely useless on here).

And may I ask why there is an exe.io link in the post? That is absolutely not necessary (not to mention has a sketchy looking page when you click on the link).

@Quinn9282 I did it just so you could scold me. You win!
@timbray I'll take care not to offend dogs so that my .dog domains will stay up for the foreseeable future 🐶
@timbray I'd heard they'd decided to shut down cleanly in case this sort of thing happened. I take it the Taliban got there first and pulled the plug on the domain?
@timbray I've always been surprised when people make "clever" use of country code TLDs without doing a little research. I guess that's one way to learn. 😬
@timbray To be fair, when the site went up the regime had no control over the TLD.

@timbray you could do a good deed and boost Erin's post about the situation instead of being a dismissive know-it-all about it.

> We knew the end was coming; we just anticipated it to take a little longer.

@timbray A related issue struck the link shortener service bit.ly where the Libyan government decided to apply moral restrictions on what kinds of links could be used with the service.
