The AVP is the best TV I own and I don’t want to use a real TV anymore. The best part is I can take this TV with me anywhere.
@mark but you can only watch alone
@brutella @mark That’s the best part 😬

@helge @brutella @mark I kind of hope AVP makes it. I think it will be the source of many sociology papers in decades to come. :)

Yeah, I can’t imagine a use for a device to watch movies without my wife. But also, clearly there are many folks in healthy relationships who want that. So it’s hopefully going to be a fascinating way to explore society and all the ways we do things.

@brutella yea that’s a downside. But no one in my family likes watching what I like most of the time so it’s ok. I’ve mostly watched things solo before the AVP. 🙂
@brutella @mark I haven’t tested, but supposedly it supports SharePlay. Wife and I are considering rewatching GoT and trading off who gets to watch it from the Throne Room.
@brandon @brutella @mark I give it 3 weeks before the Kelly household has 2 of these things 😆
@mark whenever I see avp I think of alien vs predator.
@mark these are the things I don’t want to hear right now. For my wallet’s sake 😬
@mark but seriously I’m looking forward to using it for movies in the future.. I’ve already started a list of movies I want to watch, rewatch, or hold on watching until I have one to watch it on.
@wbrowar @mark I watched the last 30 minutes or so of Interstellar on AVP, havent seen it since before I had kids. Goodness, I'm glad the pads were so absorbent for the tears, watching
Matthew McConaughey yelling at his daughter from within the black hole tesseract was intennnnnse. in a really good and impressive way.
@mattstodon @mark adding it to the rewatch list 👨‍🚀
@mattstodon @wbrowar I did the same with Gravity in 3d the other day. Being in the front row in apple’s theater (largest screen size in AVP) was so immersive and impactful. Felt like watching it for the first time.
@mark how are you typically watching movies with it? Scaling the video way up? In 3D?

@wbrowar I've been using iTunes/AppleTV for movies for years so I have a huge collection there. So I've been loving Apple's theater mode since the screen is massive. And yea if the 3d version is available, I'll watch that.

I also watched one of the films in the IMAX app and that was quite impressive as well. It's been awhile since I've seen an IMAX film, but it seems to be exactly how I remember it.

But I also watch a lot of stuff on Youtube and it's just nice overall.

@mark man, that sounds awesome. Glad you’re enjoying it so far.
@mark Everyone hopes for ‘the killer app’, but in the end it will just replaces the TV for most people and that’s OK. It’s really hard to come up with something new, as it’s in the future and nobody knows. I see the AVP as maximum possible hardware. We have to come up with the killer apps.
@mark I have a 7.1 Dolby Atmos sound system. Makes movies sound incredible with the deep thumping bass. I can't imagine AVP being able to replicate that very well. When something explodes and you can feel it, it's amazing. But I am looking forward to getting one when they come to Canada.
@mark I didn't expect a VR headset to replace TVs as well as it does, but I just watched Ahsoka Season 1 on my Quest 3. It's actually really nice, although I'm a little upset they don't have real Disney+ on there so I had to use a specific browser. I can sideload the app, and both it and Kodi (and I think the regular Oculus browser, too) turn everything into a flickering, lagging mess as long as it's playing.

I expected something like the Xreal Air to do this but VR headsets actually replace TVs quite well (for individual viewing) and I'm impressed.

The one thing these things really can't do, or can't do well, is
social viewing (like the Super Bowl!). I think it can be improved but signing in multiple people and trying to hand out invites is more of a hassle than "come here and I'll turn it on," not to mention the requirement that everyone have both an account with a service and a device to watch on.
