Just got a #Qardio BaseX weighing scales based off recommendations in the blind community, as it has a companion app. Gotta say I’m pretty disappointed. The VoiceOver #accessibility is not as good as I was expecting. I needed sighted assistance to create my profile, there are unlabelled buttons in places, and the UI could be clearer. I don’t know if it’s switched on or off, and I don’t find any battery level indicator in the app. any tips welcome!
@davidnason Yep. We need to figure out some sort of #accessibility standard for equipment that's similar to WCAG for the web.
@darrell73 Ha maybe. Though I knew the device itself was not accessible. I expected the companion app to be much better based on what I heard though.
@davidnason That surprises me. I hope you can get help with it. I have everythhihng of theirs but the scale but my experience on android sounds as though it's gone more smoothly than yours. I know this isn't ideal, but is there a best buy you could take it to and they could help get it going? They have helped us with some and with some products we didn't buy there.
@TinaSohl Thanks. I was able to get a family member to help me past the screen I was stuck on, so I’m set up now. The core functions seem usable but I am finding unlabelled buttons too, and I would like things like battery level in the app. I might try the Android app to see how it compares so. I guess because it was recommended, I expected the app to be fully accessible, but instead it’s only mostly accessible.
@davidnason I'd hope it would be. Can you label button in iOS but you shouldn't have to. Glad you're set up though.
@davidnason Before I got my Qardiobase, I wrote to Qardio about accessibility, and they sent me a fantastic blindness-specific set of instructions to set it up. Did it without any sighted assistance. Perhaps it's not perfect and I agree an accessible battery indicator is needed, but it is far better than Withings, more reliable, and the integration with the Health app is reliable.
@JonathanMosen Good to know they did that. In my case, I got stuck on the profile screen in the app during set up. I could not complete the height, weight or date of birth fields with VoiceOver. Screen recognition did not work either. Now I’m set up I’m happy enough with it, but that was frustrating and there are unlabelled elements in the app.
@davidnason I have actually seen regressions like this in several apps with recent iOS builds. So it's possible it worked for me but doesn't anymore even though Qardio will have changed nothing.
@JonathanMosen True, that could be possible. I will feed back to them nonetheless.
