So this account will be moving just as soon as the fediverse decides to let me. Nothing against this instance at all, but - in the same way as I host my own email - I've decided to host my own instance. It may or may not continue to be just me on said instance.
@quanin Why in the name of Almighty Bob do you host your own Email? I tried to do that once, never again. The actual setting it up part of the setting up process was bad enough, but then I also had to worry about spam filters everywhere.
@arqeria Because ISP provided email is hot garbage, and Gmail is free because you are the product.
@quanin I mean, you have options. Proton mail, for instance, and if you’re particularly keen on the idea of having an email associated with your own domain, there’s always registrar hosted email, Gandi do this for free with an optional paid plan for extra storage, and there are probably others too. Hell I think you might even be able to do the custom domain thing with proton, it’s been a while since I’ve checked.
@arqeria Proton didn't exist when I set up my email 18 years ago. And really, I mean, I'm hosting my own website and a couple sites for friends anyway, so email's not much of a stretch from that.
@quanin 18 years? That’s pretty impressive, I would’ve died from spontaneous heart failure within a year or 2 at most I think. How / did you even manage to get around the spam filter problem? Guess it wouldn’t have been an issue back when you first started to be fair. It seems as though the older I get, the more I realise that I just completely missed the good old days lol.
@arqeria You would guess that, but you would be wrong. Trial and error is what it comes down to. Pick defaults that look reasonable and see where they get you. The first year or two was tweeking those defaults, but honestly I haven't really touched them since.
