Water appears to have got into the storage tanks at a #Sainsburys supermarket #petrol garage in #Chippenham , #Wiltshire - many cars have broken down due to contaminated fuel, mostly E10 unleaded (although the article also mentions someone in a BMW 320d breaking down after filling up at the same place, thats a diesel motor)

@vfrmedia Are motor fuel supplies tested regularly for water like aviation fuel is? I do know that, unlike pilots, drivers don't check for water in their fuel before each time they start the engine.

@TimWardCam seems like storage tanks only tend to get checked *after* there have been reports of breakdowns.

Its also quite difficult to check what is in your own petrol tank on modern cars (without disassembly of parts of the fuel system) due to the anti-syphon baffle..

@vfrmedia Aircraft (for those who don't know) have fuel drains in appropriate places, quite likely several of them. You might have a widget like this - you push the spike up into the drain which opens the valve and lets some fuel out.

Yes, this does sometimes involve lying in the mud under the aircraft to reach the drain. Parking on tarmac like in this video counts as cheating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=_k3-DLE1aws

@TimWardCam it would be possible to open a fuel pump hose on most cars, but requires tools and getting under the vehicle (so not easy for a routine check).

Is that avgas 100LL?
