Suggestions for making Lemmy.world more user-friendly to outsiders - Lemmy.World

1. The website currently uses the Dark theme by default—using the Light theme would make Lemmy.world more friendly and inviting to new users 2. NSFW for work pics/clips should appear regardless of whether users are logged in or out (right now the only way to access them is by logging in), however, I agree that the preview thumbnails should be blurry

What are your justifications for light them being more alluring or inviting or that dark theme is detracting to users?
Just about every site/app that people use—whether it’s X, Instagram, Google, Facebook, WhatsAPP, or Reddit—uses a light theme by default because it makes these sites/apps feel brighter and stimulating versus a dark theme. I personally use the Light theme because it improves my mood; it’s psychologically uplifting. At night, however, I use the Dark them so that I can go to sleep easier (it doesn’t stimulate my mind as much as a Light theme).

Those are personal opinions. UX shows more and more people preferring dark theme. If there’s any truth it’s that there is no one rule, everyone has different preferences. Some people view light as out of date, others view it as refreshing. The number one rule is that it’s more complex than one simple answer.

Dark Mode vs. Light Mode: The UX debate settled

The science and other factors that go into deciding between Dark Mode and Light Mode for UX design.

All those sites were ditched here because they’re terrible (and white). A site needs to pick a default between light and dark, for me defaulting to dark is a way to stand out and not be the same as the rest. (Giving new users the hope not to end up in another internet sewer)

A sites theme should not stimulate the mind, it’s content should. (And most communities here do just that)

I feel both of these are matters of personal preference, and I think the admins prefer to err on the side of caution generally. Both of these are fairly cautious choices. Light mode might be more friendly or whatever, but it’s definitely more accessible, especially to persons with visual impairments.

Also, holy fuck lemmy.world update already. Your instance is broken af.

I feel both of these are matters of personal preference

Visitors to the site (and user that aren’t logged in) don’t get to have a preference. If you open this site in Incognito Mode or Private Mode, it uses the Dark theme by default.

Light mode might be more friendly or inviting, but it’s definitely more accessible, especially to persons with visual impairments.

Do you mean that Light mode is more accessible to people with visual impairments or Dark mode?

Oh, I meant that the admins were exercising that personal preference by erring on the side of caution. It had to be either light mode or dark mode, and I’m speculating they chose darkmode for accessibility reasons.

My bad, you’re right, my use of pronouns was ambiguous here. I was saying that dark mode is more accessible to persons with visual impairments because of its high contrast.
