Bayard Rustin was an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, and instrumental in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He also directed a mass boycott of segregated NYC schools in 1964.
The Kennedy administration threatened to isolate him for being gay. As a result, he was sometimes sidelined, but always brought back for his organizing abilities.
