So I kind of assume the system in Norway is not unique, but I would like to know. Does your country have a similar system? Does your country provide you with a pre-filled tax return for you to rectify and modify?
Yes, my tax return is prefilled

No, I need to fill in all the details myself

@jon, is an option in Spain
@jon Québec, Canada here. We managed to do it worse: we have TWO tax fillings to do, one at the provincial and one at the federal level. If you use a software solution, it merges both in a single filling, but still.
@Doctacosa , that is impressive. I had actually expected Canada to have a system similar to Norway.
@jon

France here, we have the same
@jon return, what return? We always pay... In Greece, tax forms for persons are partially filled depending on the kind of income.
@jon I'm in Sweden so guess we're kinda similar 😉
@jon for the record, I voted yes and live in Australia.

@jon These are two separate questions, one people who do some business and ones who's sole income is salary, but I think *no* country requires tax returns for the second type. I don't even know how is it possible to make all people, including the uneducated, the illiterate etc. fill out such a form, if they try to do the same thing here it's just not going to happen.

And people who have some small business or work freelance it's really impressive if they have the info prefilled and easy to fill.

@jon if you're not self-employed, you get the pre-filled tax return and you need just to confirm, or you can rectify if needed - this in Sweden 🇸🇪

(of course if you're self-employed this doesn't apply)

@jon some taxes come in prefilled, others need to be filed by hand. slovenia
@jon
FYI, in France, it's the same : automatically done, with possibilities of online corrections.
@jon Poland has a similar system. Everything is pre-filled based on data provided by your employer.
@jon In Poland it's prefilled and available on-line.
@jon here in 🇨🇿, it's submitted by your employer. If you have several sources of income, you have to do it yourself and it's a sad story. It pre-fills my name, address, and the ID number and that's it. I managed to do it in an hour this year, but it felt stupid because a lot of info I was filling in, the government already knows.

@jon In Germany you can opt in to have your employer submitting all relevant data to the tax office and have your tax form prefilled with the data. Not sure though how many people are using it

I've been using it for several years now. I was singing the praises of digitalization when they introduced the system

@jon here in Portugal under some basic conditions it's all automatic and click next. I could do it for the first time last year like that. The previous years I was not under the right conditions for that option. When it has to be manually there's a few places to edit and some prefilled values in some places.

Anyway I guess most people just go and pay to an outsider person to fill the taxes, it's usually much simpler since it's all very confusing.

@jon also, it's pretty interesting that in Italy 🇮🇹 if you're employed you don't even have to file any tax return at all. You can still do, if you need, but basically it's all done by your employer and you get a sort of summary each year.
@jon in austria we have a similar system, income tax are directly paid by employer optional with benefits for kids and other things.
