Raccoon behind downtown Toronto power outage affecting thousands: Hydro One

A raccoon is behind the massive power outage in downtown Toronto that is currently affecting 7,000 customers.

Toronto
UPDATE:
Toronto Hydro says all power has been restored after a raccoon [RIP] knocked out electricity to thousands of downtown Toronto customers.
@gemelliz was that you, Rocky?

In all seriousness, I hope the power is restored soon. I imagine the poor raccoon didn’t survive his escapades.

Unnerving that the Toronto power grid system is so fragile a racoon can take it out. Looking at power to be restored by 6am. Hopefully sooner.

@gemelliz oh man I hope the raccoon is ok
@grumpasaurus Sorry, sounded grim - highly doubt he's OK

@gemelliz @grumpasaurus

I'm sad to say that critters don't tend to fare well making contact with power lines. Heck, for a person it would likely be fatal.

My neighborhood in Seattle had a power outage about 10 years ago because of a squirrel. My bf at the time and I were sitting on the patio outside and heard the zap. He thought someone got shot and he was ready to hide. I ran over and expected to find a gunshot victim to tend to (because I don't hide) and there it was...the smoking squirrel. Poor fella.

@NerdRage42 @gemelliz you never know. The raccoon could have knocked other a garbage can that bumped a skateboard the tipped a precarious paint bucket that...

@grumpasaurus @NerdRage42

🤣 haha. this *could* happen esp with Toronto raccoons..

@gemelliz @grumpasaurus oh, then if this was the case, they probably caught him like...
@gemelliz bonus points if he was hiding under a linesman’s hard hat, making them throw wrenches into substations etc.
@gemelliz "The raccoon's condition is currently unknown."
@gemelliz the only way this could be a more toronto story is if ttc announced all the streetcar loops would still run but then they'd all start turning around early anyway.
@gemelliz If British badgers can move goalposts, I'm confident a Canadian racoon is perfectly able to reconfigure a few circuit-breakers. Nature is fighting back.
