A big jump in melt extent yesterday, with significant warm air hitting the Antarctic Peninsula & Amundsen Sea coastline. The melt season has kicked into gear in Antarctica this year.

NOTE: This is surface melt extent only. It does not measure basal melt (at the bed) nor iceberg discharge, both of which are more significant in Antarctica than surface melt.

It may not be obvious how these pics are made. I'm running a simple model derived from Mote et al 1993 (& later works), slightly modified for Antarctica. The model converts 🛰️ microwave emissions--> melt. They're the same satellite measurements used to create daily sea ice maps.

More sophisticated models exist but this simple one allows near-real-time detections over 🇦🇶.

Daily 🇦🇶 Melt will eventually be online at NSIDC but this is a "sneak preview app" version of it I coded up just 'cuz.

Whoops! The NSIDC didn’t collect daily-composite Tb data from the F18 satellite yesterday. The code isn’t yet choreographed to automatically draw from other satellites as backup. (F17 would be the next-in-line in this particular case.) The “Antarctica Today” auto-update failed this morning.

Lemme go fix that, I know what to do. Update (hopefully) coming soon.
