Why should anyone give money to an organization that's - knowingly - had terrorists on their payroll?

Clear the terrorists first, fire those responsible for hiring them, and then we talk.

Or, how about more sensible - end UNRWA, move responsibility to UNHCR, and have one and only one definition for refugees at the UN?

And just the relevant quote in my mind:

“It would be immensely irresponsible to sanction an Agency and an entire community it serves because of allegations of criminal acts against some individuals, especially at a time of war, displacement and political crises in the region. ”

Um, no. It's immensely irresponsible that UNRWA is totally unaware of the extent of the problem, and unwilling to fix the problem... and yet expects everyone to look the other way.

"Who do you believe, me or your lying eyes?"

@tjcasser

Yeah. There should be only one UN agency for refugees, ie the UN High Commissioner for Refugees - the agency responsible for all refugees except Palestine.

Abolish UNWRA. It's not actually the fault of UNWRA that the definition of refugee it has to work with is completely different to any other conflict. Abolish UNWRA, and its mandate. Treat Palestine like other conflicts, with the same definition of refugees and UNHCR as the responsible agency.

@tjcasser

Many so-called Palestinian refugees are not refugees according to the UNHCR definition.

It's not the fault of UNWRA that it has to apply a frankly absurd definition of who is or is not a refugee. It IS the fault of UNWRA that it has tolerated extremists and terrorists among its staff.

Abolish UNWRA. Level the playing field between Israel/Palestine and other conflict zones.

I say this, while absolutely despising the current Israeli government.

@regordane I'm hardly a supporter of the current Israeli government either - there needs to be, and swiftly one would hope, a government more willing to find a permanent and fair solution for all.

But exactly - there also needs to be a reckoning for UNRWA, an agency that has outlasted its usefulness and clearly is unwilling to reform. UNHCR can - and should - see to the needs of Palestinian refugees, as they do in situations elsewhere in the world.

@tjcasser Seriously is the UNRWA chief high? Because that's the only way any of this makes sense. You do not get to deploy the woopsy doodle doctrine after everybody finds out that you hired terrorists again.

@acarson I don't think he's 'high'. Because even venturing he's on something denies his agency in what he's doing and...

I think he's complicit.

I think that these kinds of declarations are trying to whitewash what is going on, trying to defuse any investigation into it to keep himself from blame ("It's just a few bad apples!!"), and honestly verges on gaslighting.

@acarson And honestly, he does it because to date, it WORKS.

Because the world hasn't cared so far. It's only now that it's so blatant that other countries are (at least temporarily) doing something.

@tjcasser OK that's fair. I was kind of joking about the high part. I think he's a raging antisemite and just mad that he got caught.

@acarson Sorry, in a mood where I'm just more being fatalistic about how everyone seems to be okay with harming Jews when they think they can get away with it.

But agree about him being mad about being caught. No one likes being unmasked as a hatemonger.

Unless it's to their advantage.

@tjcasser I deeply empathize with your fatalism. Most days I feel the same way.
