Germany slipped into recession last year, and the reason was record sick time. "The large scale of sick leave last year led to a huge shortfall in production. Without sick leave, the German economy would have grown by 0.5 percent last year." Due to the large number of workers who were on sick leave, the German economy shrank by 0.3 percent.

I wonder why so many people are getting sick. Its a mystery! (Can't be #COVID19, can it?I thought the pandemic was over!) /sarcasm

@augieray

I am german, wear masks etc and I have not been sick for .. 4 years.
But I know of many colleagues, friends, neighbors etc who got Covid >= 2 times
and other illnesses too. The 2023 Oktoberfest Covid peak (sewage level)
even surpassed the one from 2022 and we already had a second 2023 winter wave.

Unfortunately I personally know some long covid cases.
One of those: 1 year off (sick time too) and now only capable of part time work (not sick time ..).
Stats are peak of iceberg?

@JNSLCT My boss lives in Germany, and I've given up trying to encourage him to be safe. Like most others, he's decided the risks can be ignored for him and his family.

@augieray

#COVID19
Well, obviously... 'the worst cold I've ever had' and 'the flu' and, one I heard today, 'an infection caught on holiday in Spain'.

@augieray Hi. Well, you can become sick, if you run out of energy. Our Business Model was based on exports and cheap energy.
@augieray @davidaugust Weren’t we going to pretend COVID is over to “save” the economy? 🤔

@collectifission Recessions are caused my many factors. If COVID is a drag on economies (and multiple studies have shown it is), that doesn't mean everyone has a recession, but it does mean all economies are suffering a little for having ignored it.
