The discussion about how the EU handles borders, can be fully described by #Excel.
@matthegap Everytime I see a Windows menu screenshot I think about what a catastrophic UI the underlined letters are. It‘s as if MS had never read a single UI/UX law. Or had never understood them.
@dgavin I think they simply stopped caring long ago.
@dgavin @matthegap Can you elaborate? I'm interested in your opinion here, because I never had to think about it...
@phisch First it‘s bad from an accessibility standpoint. Unusable with Screenreaders. And it’s bad for readability for people with impaired vision (too small, reduces letter legibility). It is not logical or consistent (sometimes it‘s the first letter, sometimes not). Then these are shortcuts that are not unique (the same letter has different meanings in different menus). It blurs the line between information element and command. Just to name a few points.
@dgavin Thank you! What would a better alternative be?
@phisch FinalCut does it correctly in the tool selection menu. The command letter is on the right side, because that‘s where commands have been since before the original Macintosh. Interface elements should always be where users expect them. And all commands are aligned so you can easily get an overview. Much clearer and more legible this way. Added bonus: it gives an outline to the menu, adding to legibility and clarity of this interface element.
@phisch Compare this to this Excel menu. Can you tell me all the shortcuts without having to read the whole menu? What does "S" do?Symbol or Slicer? Or is Symbol "Sy"? You can‘t say because of bad typography, where the underline merges with the letter. You could really hold a lecture on bad UI with this screenshot alone.
