So if I did do this #cybersecurity degree, what type of laptop would I probably need? I'm assuming linux? Or is this another case of people just using Macs or PCs because of compatibility or something?
@lindsey Your base OS can be whatever you're comfortable with, but the specs are going to depend on what the curriculum of the program is. If you have a lot of technical classes, you're going to want hardware that can support the VMs needed. Shoot for at least an i5, 6GB+ of RAM, and at least 500GB SSD. If it were me doing it again, I'd shoot for something with an i7, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD. Good luck!

@lindsey

I'm saying start with a Mac, because it's way easier to get a Windows VM running on a Mac than the other way around! OSX is very like Linux at the command-line/base system level anyway.

But probably the real answer is, your educational institution will have guidance?

@negative12dollarbill They only had minimum requirements and what I couldn't have (like a Chromebook). I ended up going with a Mac.
@lindsey
I'm sure that will be fine to begin with. You can wipe the Mac OS and turn it into a Linux machine in half an hour if it comes to that.
