Big Galaxy S24 leak reveals Samsung's strategy against Google's Pixel phone - Lemmy.World

Quoting the tl;dr in the linked article: > - Samsung could be stepping up its game by offering seven years of major Android updates for the Galaxy S24 series, and the generous update policy might extend to other Galaxy flagships. > > - The Galaxy S24 series might also introduce charges for AI features like Live Translate and Pixel-like photo editing tools after 2025. > > - There’s speculation that users may need to sign in to their Samsung accounts for certain AI functionalities.

That is not the only big thing of pixels. To me it’s the openness. These are, ironically, the best and easiest phones to leave google. Or at least root them without the evergrowing hassles of each iteration of samcraps.

Noone would ever buy a PC if they wouldn’t get admin-access and mustn’t install Linux or whatever. With phones they managed to keep us out.

i always found it funny that the best method of having a privacy focused phone (without having significant tradeoffs like the pinephone) is to buy the phone from the company who violates privacy the worst, and flashing over it.

True. This is why the general recommendation is typically to buy used. That way, they don’t get additional revenue from the sale of a new phone, and it also decreases e-waste.

(Sure, the revenue may be a drop in the bucket, but it’s still something.)

There’s an argument to be made that buying used improves resale value and thus increases the price they can sell new, but I will not make it šŸ˜‚

I think they probably break even or even sell these devices at a loss. The money is in the data-mining. And they want to show other OEMs/consumers what a ā€œflagshipā€ Android experience can/should look like.

Kinda like video game consoles are sold at a loss to subsidize game sales.

Noone would ever buy a PC if they wouldn’t get admin-access and mustn’t install Linux or whatever. With phones they managed to keep us out.

Realistically this only forms a tiny part of the population though, that’s pretty much the only reason why they’ve been able to keep people out.

If only a tiny part of people care at all, why even make it sooooo complicated and change every damn update? Let people that WANT control, have control. The others don’t care anyway and are scared enough by a ā€œare you REALLY REALLY REALLY sure you know what you’re doing here?ā€-security-question.

I don’t pay 1000,- for a phone that isn’t mine, and I hate that this has become the default.

On the one hand, I could see bad actors taking advantage of easily rooted/unlocked systems. Maleficent resellers could also take advantage.

Definitely give me the warnings and let me know what could happen, but let me unlock it and own it completely.

That’s how it is usually when rooted. A confirmation is shown.

Or let it be set do decline by default and let the user explicitly change this. Problem solved. Of course malign intent wouldn’t be benefical with pre-rooted-no-confirmation-phones 😌

I agree with you but to play devil’s advocate, even for the simple issue of app sideloading on Android, there’s no shortage of dumb users out there that willingly bypass all sorts of warnings and install apps that are very obviously malware.

… And? Does a system have to be adjusted to the lowest denominator?

If you use a thing, of which you have zero clues about, and still fuck around with it, you get what you ask for. People don’t understand the slightest thing about the internet and still use it to go to ā€œfreeā€ streaming-sites and whatnot.

I don’t say rooting-per-default. But an easy option to do so. And also unlocking the bootloader. It’s ok if it’s hidden. And let it come with 5 security questions Ć” la ā€œu rly sure?ā€. If someone doesn’t know what he’s doing, and still does it, and screws up, so be it. Charge the dumbnut in support.

Don’t shoot the messenger lol. I’m in agreement with you.
Oh sorry, that wasn’t meant to come across harsh 😊

Noone would ever buy a PC if they wouldn’t get admin-access

Why not? They do it with phones all the time.

ā€œyou can’t uninstall a system-appā€ (while trying to get rid of all the bloatware like mcaffee) ā€œyou cannot upgrade to win8, but you can factory-reset your win7ā€ ā€œyou can only factory-reset 3 times, please call <insert company>-support!ā€ ā€œyou don’t have access to this fileā€ "defender has removed this ā€˜malware’ and there’s nothing you can do about it’ ā€œYou can’t install linux on this machine, this machine came bundled with Win7Homeā€ ā€œyou cannot install this programā€ ā€œyou are not allowed to enter the biosā€ ā€œyou cannot boot from this non-licensed deviceā€ (usb-stick) etc.

One of these would probably do it :-)

exactly. the golden age was like 2015ish. great roms, easy to root, headphone jack, flat screens.

7 years of updates is the tour of competition I like to see

Nickle and diming ā€œAIā€ features isn’t.

I’m pretty happy about that, I don’t want AI features and not paying for them seems to guarantee they won’t be involved with the phone.

I hate all the AI upscaling they do, those moon shots suck.

I mean, just have 65W+ charging. It’s the single biggest feature that neither offers.

It’s as if the whole world is split between those who could not live without it and those who haven’t yet experience it.

I was at an airport recently where my flight was delayed a few hours. There were so many anxious people waiting to use plug sockets, the fear of a dead battery making the atmosphere tense everywhere, you could almost smell it.

I waited for the queues to form when the flight was called to board and eventually a plug socket near my seat in the bar became free. 20% to 80% in 15 minutes, onto the plane and sorted.

Google, Samsung & Apple are useless for me until they have that.

Or. www.ossia.com/cota

This is the future.

You don’t need 100% battery. You need a battery that doesn’t go flat.

Fast charging just buggers the battery. Too much heat isn’t great

Cota: Real Wireless Power Technology & Charging

Explore how Cota makes wireless power and charging a reality and learn how you can add it to your smart products and connected home.

I remember having this idea in 2016, but being a massive fucking idiot, never even remotely knew how to make it an actual thing. Good to see there's a market for it and that someone is executing on the tech.

With a wireless product like that you’re probably not even going to get enough power to charge your phone. Maybe sustain it.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDdRVtka0Jg

You don’t need to charge it though.

Don’t even need to sustain it. Just slow it’s discharge. I don’t need 100% phone.

I barely go out. Either at the office or at home.

Once we get solid state batteries in phones. A slow charge overnight and and slowing charge during the day. That’s all I need. Probably a lot of people.

People who are flying and all over the place. They have something for they. Battery packs. They don’t need kits all over the place. Can charge on plane. Can charge in Uber. Can charge on bus. In pubs/cafes.

You may want to watch the video. Specifically the 2.5mW segment.
My pixel has a slow charge feature I think. It uses that by default at night usually. Pretty nifty I guess.
I have the same. Every phone should. It’s just thrashing the battery and you don’t need full charge an hour after going to bed. It’s got hopefully 8 hours to charge.
It would be ā€œniftyā€ if you had absolutely any control over it.

Is there a timestamp ? I’m not watching a 1 hour vid.

Watt up and ossia have been around for a few years. Both have products on the ground. I have full faith in them. I understand that physics has a theoretically limit for power. More power requires more energy. Too much energy and you’ll burn a face off.

Yet these companies exist and have backers in the billions. Either they have a working system or they are great conmen.

Wouldn’t a power bank solve that issue? So far the airports I’ve been to usually have the power sockets completely hogged so I don’t even count on the chance that one is free. I usually bring along a power bank that gets me through 2-3 full charges of my phone.
really I’ve rarely seen airports that full even LAX but I also don’t travel during the busy times of the year
I am from Singapore so most of my flights are from Changi Airport which is quite packed I guess.
Charging extra for features of a Ā£1000+ phone is hilarious. They really try and act like we’re getting them for free.

They want to be apple.

But they are not.

Full disclosure: I didn’t read the article and only read the bulletin points. However, that last point really convinced me leave Scamsung. When I got my current S21 Ultra, I was bummed to find out that I couldn’t root it. I’m about to buy a Pixel 7 Pro and never look back.

I can root my s23 ultra (from what I’ve read at least), however I choose not to because it would permanently break Knox and there would be no way of undoing that outside of replacing the logic board.

With that said, my next phone will probably be a Fairphone.

Are you from the US or the EU/elsewhere? I ask because the reason My S21 can’t be rooted is because it the US/Hong Kong Models use Snapdragon CPUs. I don’t know if the same applies to the successors.
I am in US. I went back and found the article I had seen before -> xda-developers.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-root-… I also checked your version and it seems that only the Exinos and Hong Kong Snapdragon versions can be rooted -> xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s21-series-root…

Things I want in a phone:

  • Decent camera
  • Aux Port - because I want the option
  • at least one mappable button
  • Expandable SD card slot
  • Debloated OS
  • good speaker phone
  • water resistant and drop resistant

My favorite phone in the last 10 years was the Samsung S8 Active, before that, the HTC One (front facing speakers). Before that, probably the Samsung FlipShot and LG Chocolate.

I miss innovation in phone designs. They’re all the same phone now.

Anyone have any recommendations for the US? I was thinking a fairphone but I think that’s UK only.

After a couple of Redmi Note phones, I’m currently looking at Motorola. I need to see how ROM development is on their phones.

Motorola has been making a lot of midrange devices lately with Mediatek chipsets and I owned one for 2 years. My particular device (edge 20 fuaion) sold pretty well but there was no ROM development at all.

So pick one with a Qualcomm chip and you will probably have a good time. I Think the recent Moto Edge 40 pro got some Custom rom development lately.

Sony covers most of those, but they are not cheap.
You can get last year’s model or the year before that cheaper. It’s not like there are huge differences year over year anyway.
But Sony only provides 2 to 3 years of software and security updates, so getting an older model might not be the best idea either.
You can switch to a community ROM like Lineage when they stop. They’re A/B devices that support GSI images, you can install any GSI UI over the Sony firmware. In practice some of them support more features than others but they do work.

Aux Port - because I want the option at least one mappable button Expandable SD card slot Debloated OS

These are user-centric features that stifle revenue for the corporations that make these things, and unfortunately consumers have told corporations that they don’t care enough about them.

I’ll be leaving the Samsung ecosystem after 10 years. They simply don’t offer a phone for me anymore. I WANT an SD card, and waterproofing. And the A line camera is too shite.

I’ll probably get some Chinese phone next and give them a shot. Samsung can get fucked with the 1000$ phones that continuously remove features.

Why not try a Pixel then? I'm on the S22 Ultra and already thinking of giving pixel a go on my next upgrade. They touted 4 years of support for this model but if they increase to 7 then I'll just need to wait and see what's out there at that time.
They want an SD card
Stop tagging people. It’s unnecessary and annoying.
@helenslunch it automatically tags people. My bad.
I think Sony and Asus still have phones with that stuff and a headphone jack
Which Chinese phone does that? They were the first to copy Apple when they removed all that.
So, when is the camera tech finally going to be good enough to make the camera flush with the phone body?
It is now. Just make the phone thicker instead of having a bump.
Right? Add battery. Nobody cares to have their phone be a fashion model. We want it to last through the day.
I was talking about this earlier but they could use lithium iron phosphate batteries where normally you need the battery life it would now let the battery go nearly 10 years before losing more than 85% of the chance capacity
Any case should already make the cameras flush
Miss me with that AI bullshit, just make the screen completely flat on S24U and I’ll be more than happy.
Please. Who is interested in the curve anymore? I know they just do it for the people in the store.
