On this day in 2001 Wikipedia was made! The Internet would be a very different place without this encyclopaedia, and it's free for everyone, forever. What's your favourite article?
#WikipediaDay
@wikimediauk given that I have used it many times as an example, I would say https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_9000

@juandesant great choice. We hope everyone else who read the article has the same earworm 🐛 🎶
@wikimediauk little did Nupedia know, it was about to be the old pedia 😎.
@sofia onwards and upwards 👍
@wikimediauk Wikipedia says the anniversary is tomorrow…
@dwcloudcutter we're very happy to celebrate all week!
@wikimediauk it's hard to find a website that just contains the information you need. Wikipedia does that exceptionally well. For every single page.
For me that was referencing Windows build numbers to versions.

"No, this is not an indecent proposal. It's an idea to add a little feature to Nupedia. Jimmy Wales thinks that many people might find the idea objectionable, but I think not. "Wiki," pronounced \wee'-kee\, derives from a Polynesian word, "wikiwiki," but what it means is a VERY open, VERY publicly-editable series of web pages".

[Nupedia-l] Let's make a wiki

@wikimediauk On this day in 2001 someone took Douglas Adams‘ idea from 1978 and made the Hitchhikers Guide. #towelday #wikipedia

@wikimediauk My current favourite page, on #BlueMonday, contains the absolutely non-scientific and meaningless formula to determine the most depressing day of the year, including the description of the flaws (see ALT). Given that it is also #WikipediaDay, today simply can't be the most depressing day of the year ;-)

@wikimediauk
The following really happened in 1996 😂
He: "There's this THING called internet. You can share any information you like on a WEB PAGE! And it's all free!"
Me: "Oh. Well, but companies will use it too."
He: "No, impossible, it's not commercial."
Me: "I won't hold my breath. But what would be cool is an online encyclopaedia where you could find all sorts of information."
He: "No, that's impossible because a web page can't contain that much and internet is limited space."
Me: "Oh."
