Question: do you wait for all the guests (family members) to arrive before serving dinner?

It struck me recently that I don’t.

A couple of the offspring are famously tardy - the rest of us just started dinner without them. When Kid1 finally turned up, his fiancé said she was worried everyone would be hungry and waiting to eat.

Nah, said my son. We don’t do that here. Turn up late and you get leftovers.

I mean, I guess everyone understood the unwritten rule, even though I didn’t realise there was one.

We’re having a belated family Christmas lunch tomorrow. Food will be served at 1pm, to whoever is present at the time.

@idealaw We wait. It's culturally very rude to start eating before everyone has arrived. As a result, people come within an appropriate window because they don't want to keep everyone else waiting.
@heycitizen we would wait for non-family guests. But it turns out we’re pretty casual with the kids.
