Second time is a charm  . First attempt I soldered the D1 Mini upside-down. Didn't fry anything but I wasn't able to unsolder all the pins again.

Luckily I had ordered multiple PCBs anyways - salvaged the display and successfully assembled the second Hackheld Vega (by @Spacehuhn ) successfully
