My latest take on the Covid situation in England... and what we could do to reduce future waves

https://christinapagel.substack.com/p/the-latest-on-englands-big-jn1-covid

Looking at 2022's big waves suggest an infection peak next week.

Be careful out there - there is SO MUCH infection around.

The latest on England's big JN.1 Covid wave - unlikely to have peaked yet...

As we went into Christmas 2023, the ONS Winter Infection Survey (based on thousands people testing on lateral flow tests regardless of symptoms) showed that we were in the biggest wave England had seen since the summer of 2022. Neither the ONS survey nor the UKHSA published data updates over the Christmas period, but we do have some new information to inform what might happen over the next few weeks.

Diving into Data & Decision making
@chrischirp I wonder about the "expiration" of many pharmaceuticals, what exactly the time periods are based on and whether it just results in unnecessary waste. Sure, some compounds may break down in a short period of time but others may be stable for many years in normal storage. For a relatively new drug it seems to me that it may not be known how long it's actually good for.

@chrischirp Family member with serious(!) problems in hospital in a respiratory (!) ward, six beds. Everyone is allowed to have up to two visitors at once. Doctors, nurses and visitors… no one (!) voluntarily masking. I really have no words left. We aren’t protecting anyone. Guess „dead people are less expensive to society“ is what drives this lack of mandated protection. How no one wears one voluntarily…

Anyway, that’s why I am so thankful that you still fight for protective measures 🙏

@chrischirp my take is its rife Chris my other half is in right state but he has chronic gastrointestinal issues anyway so this has really hit him hard, we are both wsuting for tests kit to arrive but I will be amazed if he doesn't have covid he's saying he's freezing but red hot to touch and 39 temp , he's never had covid before. I'm a bit achy especially my ears weirdly and have a cough. 12 people I know in Cardiff are positive
@Rhid83 oh no! certainly sounds like ti could be covid... take it easy. many of my family have it right now
@chrischirp Jim is getting there thank god now
@chrischirp currently recovering from jn1 and it really hit me harder than the previous infection I had. But with asthma it's been a lot worse as well. Nobody seems to mention the lung pain its really bad!! Very painful.
