Chris McLeod (via @[email protected]) has the right idea, but like many tech-savvy folks underestimates how daunting it can be to set up WordPress on a server. Not to mention even small costs.

Of the free blogging platforms, I think good old Blogger is the value proposition. Warts and all.

@adapples If you don't care about comments (or if you're willing to outsource comments to someone else), there's no particular value in using a CMS like WordPress over a static site generator like Jekyll or Hugo, and both have modes/templates that implement a blog-type presentation.
@wollman I would say there are many advantages besides comments, such as the ability to tailor a user experience using categories or labels—the database function of a blog.
