We were passing Te Roto o Wairewa/Lake Forsyth this afternoon, and were lucky to find a group of at least 20 pūteketeke/Australasian crested grebes on the lake by the picnic area.

Thanks to comedian John Oliver, in 2023 this species was voted Aotearoa-NZ's Bird of the Century.

Admittedly, they are pretty fabulous.
