Finally got my first "wrapped"/"year in review", from Steam. Am I supposed to have an emotional response to these things other than "oh… so you're surveilling me, and then doing analysis on the surveillance"
@mcc this feels really cynical, the data's always been there on an analytical sense for either you or companies to view. The wrapped is just an auto highlight reel to share with your friends and stuff
@ahzidaljun one time i worked at a company where we sat down and we were like "how can we prevent data breaches?" and then we thought and went "we can simply not gather or retain data in the first place" and ever since then I have wondered why no other company works this way
@mcc @ahzidaljun Yeah, that's the public library approach. I get the impression that most Steam users enjoy seeing their stats, and publishers would want those numbers to gauge popularity beyond sales figures, but an opt-out feature for personal data retention would be great.
