PREreview Annual Report 2023

PREreview works to bring more equity and transparency to scholarly peer review by supporting and empowering communities of researchers, particularly those at early stages of their career (ECRs) and who have been historically excluded, to review preprints in a process that is rewarding to them. The year 2023 stands out as a transformative period for us, defined by three pivotal elements: reflection, radical listening, and rebuilding. With two new passionate individuals joining our team, we knew we needed time to re-evaluate and re-align our work around our shared values. We also knew we needed to press pause on some initiatives and product features to reassess their scope with input and feedback from our community. We built our annual strategic approach to advance our mission around three key objectives: Establish processes for community input into programming, product, and governance. Towards this objective, we dedicated ourselves to actively seeking diverse perspectives and understanding the needs and aspirations of those we serve. Through community sprints, surveys, and one-on-one interactions, we embraced the richness of varied voices, fostering a culture where every opinion is valued. Towards the end of the year, we began a consultation process with Dr. Kari Jordan and Tara Robertson that will carry over to 2024 to help us strengthen our governance and decision-making processes. Increase global engagement with PREreview. Toward this goal, we set up a new bi-monthly newsletter, enhanced our social media presence, and created a new Community Slack workspace. In 2023 we also expanded our engagement efforts in providing training in conducting constructive and socially conscious peer review, running a combined 12 Open Reviewer and Open Grant Reviewer workshops training over 250 reviewers in collaboration with 8 partner organizations. Our free community workshops and new equitable pricing model for training will hopefully enable us to reach even more communities of researchers around the globe in 2024.  Integrate PREreview workflows within the open publishing ecosystem. Toward this goal, we collaborated with Current Research in Neurobiology (CRNEUR) to pilot a new community-based review method and will write up the results early next year. Our re-launched PREreview Clubs have got off to a flying start on publishing open, collaborative preprint peer reviews. We also recently launched our request-a-review feature using COAR Notify to connect preprint authors posting with bioRxiv and SciELO Preprints with our PREreview community members. We are excited to continue this work in 2024 and share more about our progress soon.  In our first-ever Annual Report, you can find more about what PREreview has done since its formal inception in 2018, our main 2023 achievements, and our team.

We began the year with 3 goals:

1⃣ Establish processes for community input into programming, product, and governance

2⃣ Increase global engagement with PREreview

3⃣ Integrate PREreview workflows within the open publishing ecosystem

We end this year having listened to more than 180 community members from 20+ countries via 1:1 interviews and design sprints. You all have informed our product roadmap in ways we could have not predicted. THANK YOU!
As a result https://PREreview.org is hosting 800+ #preprint reviews with 2500+ PREreviewers, and a growing community of PREreview Clubs that are forging around groups of individuals committed to open, constructive preprint review.
PREreview: Open preprint reviews. For all researchers.

After much anticipation, we launched the new #requestareview feature which is connecting @biorxivpreprint and @[email protected] preprint authors with PREreviewers via #COARNotify. We can't wait to optimize this feature in 2024!

Request your next PREreview on bioRxiv and SciELO Preprints via the COAR Notify Protocol

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new request-a-review feature on PREreview.org! Powered by the COAR Notify Protocol, this new feature will help you improve your research ahead of wider distribution or publication.

With your input we also launched a brand new structured PREreview workflow that enables users to answer specific questions and add context to each of them to make the reviews as useful as they can be for the reader.

We have also reached a new high in the number of researchers (400+) trained in how to engage in socially conscious manuscript and grant review.

We are honored to have contributed to the transformative work by Dr. Ebony Carter and colleagues at Obstetrics & Gynecology. What they are doing to surface and fight racism in reproductive medicine should serve as model to other publishers. https://journals.lww.com/greenjournal/fulltext/2023/10000/the_green_book_and_the_green_journal__finding_our.2.aspx

We successfully engaged in a pilot with Current Research in Neurobiology delivering 5 collaborative #LiveReviews, the output of which were 5 published and collaboratively authored PREreviews that were used by the journal in their review process https://content.prereview.org/prereview-and-crneur-pilot
PREreview and CRNEUR launch a collaborative and community-based review pilot

We are thrilled to announce a new collaboration between PREreview and Current Research in Neurobiology (CRNEUR)—a gold open access journal that publishes original research in neuroscience. Together we will host 5 open, collaborative, and interactive review events styled after PREreview Live Reviews. Register for our fifth and final event
