The Romanian Revolution of 1989 began on December 16th, and by Christmas, it wrapped up with a surprising twist. At least, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu certainly didn't see it coming, considering his power absolute. So what went wrong?

@Free_Press Ceausescu's demise was pre-planned and well executed. His successor -- Iliescu just happened to be at the TV station and took over without much complaint... he was vetted by the Russians (went to school with Gorbachev). Romania only became free of Russian influence when it joined both the EU and NATO.
