I can’t help but wince whenever I see someone hold in a sneeze. It gives me physical discomfort.
I can’t help but hold them in. I used to be able to produce a full, loud, relieving sneeze as a young kid, but my dad thought it was performative or somehow fake. I realized recently that’s probably why I stifle every single one now and have for >30 years. This post actually scares me.
This made me think of mirror therapy… wonder if you could recondition by watching a video of somebody sneezing simultaneously. Sounds like a dumb suggestion, writing it out, but if it doesn’t you could bookmark a video and throw it on your phone home screen.
Hopefully you’re a “pro” now and that’s enough to avoid eardrum ruptures, vertigo, ruptured eye blood vessels! 😬

db0Hah, I have the same type of sneeze. Someone once told me they don’t believe I can have such an “archetypical” sneeze. It still blows my mind that some children were traumatized so much for this, they learned to instinctively suppress their sneezes. Of all the things to get upset about ffs…

My mom only ever holds in sneezes. She says sneezes are disgusting and unnecessary. But I love a good loud sneeze. I don’t think I can hold in a sneeze. I might show her this

Contrary to what other people seem to take from this, it rather shows how unrisky holding in a sneeze is. If it was significantly dangerous, we’d know more than one case.
I actually had a relative who died from drinking a sip of water from a glass. Got it in the wrong pipe. I still would not warn people from drinking water after I learned about it. Again, after all, the overwhelming majority of evidence points to the opposite; it’s perfectly safe.
It’s not a great comparison, since there is a good alternative to holding in a sneeze, whereas there is no good alternative to drink water.
