OK…maybe it’s because I’m working on a little “new age-ish” music project at the moment, but I’ve been drawn back in to the music of Basia, and I am completely stumped as to why so many Americans outside her hardcore fan base have forgotten her. Time and Tide was a HUGE album in the late 80s…it went platinum in the U.S. and managed to peak at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 while hitting No. 1 on the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. That is no easy feat!

And after Basia had so much solo* success with Time and Tide, how did the follow-up album, 1990’s London Warsaw New York, do? IT DID EVEN BETTER! That album peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 while topping the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Why is Basia so overlooked outside her fan/genre base these days? “Cruising for Bruising” reached No. 29 on the Hot 100. That is a genuine hit record!

(*and, yes, I’m aware of her work as part of the jazz trio Matt Bianco)
