w000t!

As of today (past night) cars are only allowed to drive at max of 30 kilometers per hour within the city of Amsterdam(many places it's a lot lower!)

It's a new rule to give people walking and on bikes a more safer feeling

Glad to see infrastructure change in favor of the human and not the car

@stux

Nice to hear, Amsterdam is on my list of places to visit someday! 🌷 🇳🇱

@stux Now if we could only get drivers to stick to the posted 40km in our neighbourhood. There is one straight-away where we have a radar sign and cars are regularly going over 50...
@stux Just as it should be
@stux next do speed limits on the bikes!
@stux Not just a safer feeling; It will actually prevent a decent amount of accidents, and reduce the severity of damage in those accidents that still occur. It will also reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

@TomEtty Indeed! 💪

I hope the last is also possible indeed, hopefully this new rule won't lead to traffic pile ups

@stux superb... whereas *we* have a numpty prime minister campaigning against them - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-66965714 🙄🤦‍♂️
Sunak vows to stop 20mph zones and review LTNs

PM says measures like 20mph zones should not be forced on drivers but Labour accuses him of hypocrisy.

BBC News
@stux you'd hate it in the US!
@JustABokoblin @stux In the US, many cities already have surface street speed limits of 25. The cities are designed differently, with faster roads elevated. https://data.sfgov.org/Transportation/Map-of-Speed-Limits/ttcm-fwt2
Map of Speed Limits | DataSF | City and County of San Francisco

A. SUMMARY Maximum speed limits per street segment for the City of San Francisco. Speed limits are indicated primarily for streets that have speeds greater than 25 MPH, unless the speed limit has been changed from a higher speed or a speed survey has been conducted to enforce the de facto speed limit of 25 MPH. 25 MPH is the de fact speed limit for most residential and commercial streets, and apply to streets on this map denoted by a 0 MPH label. Alleys narrower than 25 feet can have de facto speed limits of 15 MPH. B. METHODOLOGY Speed limit legislation information is taken from MTAB legislation and in some cases directives from engineers in the 5212 classification. Speed limit implementation information is taken from SSD Shops Reports and then parsed via python code. Implementation for speed limits will specify when signs are put in stating the new speed limits, and the work order that the sign installation was spec'd in. C. UPDATE FREQUENCY Updated quarterly or on an as need basis by request

@stux sure makes it easier for bikes to attain NCV (near-car velocity), although from what I remember of Amsterdam, most of the bikes are 1-speed

@stux It will not be actively enforced yet. That will come somewhere next year, according to local media. But it is a welcome measure to make streets safer.

As a e-bicyclist myself, I also would like to have see law enforcement tackle illegally souped-up e-bikes that zoom around way above 25kph speeds within city limits.

Some inbred half-wits even deliberately scare people by braking at high speeds next to pedestrians. Their bikes should be taken away from them along with a hefty fine.

@stux I totally mis-read that as 'cats are only allowed to drive...' 😆
@stux Having just finished reading a conversation where the word cats was frequently used, when I first read this, I read cats instead of cards, and thought - wow, Amsterdam is even odder than I thought...
