I set myself up to paint a mini for a contest. I want to paint this fellow as if he is watching one of his mini nukes go off in the distance. Took a look at some OSL stuff but that seem to mostly cover smallish and close by light sources or moonlight. Anyone got a good lead on something looking more like a nuclear explosion or lightning strike? I guess going super bright/dark on each side and have sharp shadows is a good start. Would appreciate tips n‘ tricks. #fallout #minipaining #warmongers

Little update on the kaboom fella. Black primer, spray can light gray from the front and a light mist from all around, dry brushing light grey on the transitions and a pure white drybrush and a bit of edge painting on the front. Hope that will be a solid foundation.

Next step will be base colors with contrast and purple in the shadows. After that I will think how to apply the direct white/yellow explosion lights. Either airbrush of white + yellow or creep up with glazes 🧐

Base colors and a sloppy first drybrush on the blast side done. Will start to do some glazing of light yellows/oranges next. Probably will have a few passes of white drybrushing and edge painting and then some yellow/orange glazing to get where I want - if that’s the way to do it in the first place that is 😂

Another pass done. Don’t feel like there is much more I can do on the effect. Will probably give it another good look tomorrow and see if I can make it a little more interesting from the back. If you see anything that looks out of place let me know, would ya?

After a two week Covid break I did some final touches and submitted kaboom boy here to the contest over at the Modiphius Discord. His name is Bob btw.
