"In just a few years, we have gone from being relatively secure in our democracy to being a few short steps, and a matter of months, away from the possibility of dictatorship."
from Bob Kagan

A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending.

There is a clear path to dictatorship in the United States, and it is getting shorter every day. So why is everyone behaving like normal?

@anneapplebaum WTF!?? Could this guy be any more of a doomer? Those of us that would be the “vermin” in Trump’s imperial conquest don’t have a say? Our votes can’t possibly stop the juggernaut of Trump the winner? We all bow down and say let the retribution begin? Jesus. He doesn’t think much of American voters.

@anneapplebaum

Spot-on, really. Biden is well on his way to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, if he hasn't caught it already. I won't be voting for Trump, but I can't vote for Biden either, not after the way he chokeslammed America's pandemic response and then let Palantir flush the CDC down the toilet.

@noyes @anneapplebaum lol. Yeah. Right. You will be voting for Trump one way or the other. Got it.
@noyes @anneapplebaum
I suppose you realise that Biden doesn’t ‘snatch’ anything. If people don’t vote for him, he will lose. You are one of those people.
@anneapplebaum I don’t know Bob Kagan at all, nor have I read many of his books. I have read a couple of books by his brother. But….am I off base when I say this feels like a “moderate” Republican telling me he is going to vote for Trump? And so are the others of his station?
@MiriShuli @anneapplebaum Kagan won’t vote Trump.
@jgordon @anneapplebaum That’s exactly what he is saying he will do. This is Robert Kagan, not the Supreme Court Justice Kagan. Robert is telling us not enough Republicans — like him— will choose Democracy. When you write to the country something is inevitable and we should just accept it, you are telling us exactly what you will do.
@anneapplebaum Well, if WaPo and NYT keep doing the "Old Biden" == "Her Emails" we are.
@anneapplebaum oh hey look liberals not understanding that depicting trump as Caesar will get his fans MORE excited for him and not less because they don't know history. #msm taking L's once again because they lack awareness of how fascists think. Ignore #the_washington_post, read leftist news instead, and read up on #socialist theory and #fascist lies/narratives to combat these fashoids properly.

The Brennan Center for Justice has a TON of good voter information, https://www.brennancenter.org/ and, if you don't already have one, organize a chapter of the League of Women Voters. Democracy better when they're involved.

The American Association of University Women has a how-to on organizing a voter registration drive or just sitting outside Wal Mart with a folding chair and a card table. https://www.aauw.org/resource/organize-a-voter-registration-drive/

VOTE BLUE like your life depends on it.

On ALL levels.

Clarification.

The previous toot is a copy of the most liked comment with the mentioned article.

The right sentiment must be "Fight like hell to retain your Democracy."

If you give up before the elections, you have already LOST.

When you win. Reform the government institutions.

The more disturbing Trump’s public proclamations become, the more US plutocrats seem to want him to win

@anneapplebaum I think if there is a clear fragility in US democracy, it's the FPTP electoral system and the inevitable drive to the two party system. Fundamentally, it would appear that somewhere between 20-30% of Americans are okay with replacing democracy with an authoritarian president. That 20-30% is able to leverage that to effectively take over one of two parties in the primaries. Now it just needs 20-30% of everyone else to just not be too bothered.
