This is a proper scientist: emotionaly attached to his theory, but brave enough to accept reality in the end.
There was controversy and data from others that made me at times start to doubt its validity [of the theory of criticallity] . The most jarring news, though, came from my trusted colleague, Gerardo Ortiz, a condensed matter theorist. He and our graduate students Rashid Williams-Garcia and Mark Moore, slowly and calmly approached me with arguments that the brain might not really be critical. Although I almost felt dirty as I listened to them, I was resolved to be a brave scientist and value logic and evidence above my emotions. Over time, and reasoning together with them, I slowly came to grips with a new truth.
