I honestly believe comedians like Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, John Leguizamo et al are doing a vastly better job of informing the public about important issues than our hopelessly compromised fourth estate.
@Green_Footballs By miles and miles! It's depressing that #journalism now considers it forbidden to speak the truth out loud.
@Green_Footballs For sure. Truth is being spread out.
@Green_Footballs I think that’s been true for a long time.
@Green_Footballs The Onion has been a truer chronicle of American history for the past 25 years than any newspaper or network channel.
@crisperthanthou @Green_Footballs In UK it has been Private Eye which used to satirise politics but is finding it hard as politics so laughable now
@Green_Footballs I love them all, but Jordan Klepper in particular is amazing at what he does and brave as hell. Every reporter who is assigned by the boss to go to the "heartland" and find out what "real people" think should take lessons from him.

@not2b @Green_Footballs

Jordan Klepper was at the Jan 6th insurrection with a filming crew. That was pretty brave. They had to flee eventually.

@Green_Footballs ...and they aren't doing anything like enough.
@Green_Footballs where do they get their information, though?

@Green_Footballs The court jester comedians are very good at what they do but they can only go so far as they are still, like 99.9% of the rest of us, still in the employ of business as usual, the corporate enterprises which are working the world into collapse.

Don't expect corporate media to do an honest and complete critique of corporate politics, economics, or media itself.

@Green_Footballs this 20! year old bit where John Stewart and Tucker Carlson go head to head is classic. Guess who ended up looking like a complete asshat?

@Green_Footballs I get my US news from Colbert and Meyers. Because if its always so bloody awful, why not wrap it up it up in a bit of fun as the Titanic goes down.

@Green_Footballs

I thought that when I watched the latest John Oliver - expose on the Dollar stores crap.

John Oliver on dollar stores: ‘They treat workers with indifference or outright contempt’

The Last Week Tonight host dug into mismanagement and employee mistreatment of stores such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree

@Green_Footballs john Oliver also favors dictators in his reports. See Putin!
@Green_Footballs
I think you have to remember they often have a cadre of writers to help them. Individuals like us are tasked with filtering the flotsam and jetsam of current events by ourselves. I think alot of the ultra right media (OAN, etc.) is the flipside of hip comedy news...they both 'entertain' with often empty calories of sentiment. I wonder how often comedy personality news is wrong and upfront about it. I remember Colbert's constant harping on PeePee tapes and Trump's golden showers...a so not important issue that evaporated without even a lingering bathtub ring of 'emotional truth'. Personally, I read more than watch, and find there are still plenty of higher standard on-air news sources out there--the WWW makes it easier to find news and analysis today. The onus is on the individual to seek, weigh and support news sources of higher standards...
@Green_Footballs This is why I link SLTrib.com's superb cartoonist Pat Bagley's 4x/week editorial cartoons here, except when they are focused on strictly local issues. Bagley WAS on Twitter, but bailed as soon as Musk took over. He is @bagley Today's: https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/bagley/2023/11/22/bagley-cartoon-talking-turkey/

@Green_Footballs For sure, and it's seemed that way for a long time. That was the hallmark of Jon Stewart's time at The Daily Show (not that he's the only one, but he was a trendsetter in that area), and I remember being pretty convinced of that as far back as 2009-ish, maybe earlier.
@Green_Footballs True, but i was also very disappointed in the way John Oliver ran smear campaigned Bernie Sanders when at that time, Bernie was relatively the most progressive candidate with sensible policies.

@Green_Footballs

Too bad Bill Maher has turned out to be such a piece of shit.

@Green_Footballs
Actually the news about the popularity of right wing crazies is so depressing that these comedians make it somewhat tolerable to consume.
I also enjoy the southern, red-neck comedian, Trae Crowder.
In addition, Beau of the Fifth Column is a self professed anarchist who is a calming, enlightening, progressive news source on Youtube.

@Green_Footballs I agree. But this has also contributed to politics as entertainment -- not the healthiest trend.
@Green_Footballs Also Elliott and Ricky at Internet Today.
@Green_Footballs hell yes they are. I learn more about current events from Jon Oliver than any news outlet. Used to be the same for the Daily Show.
@Green_Footballs That's been true for a while
STUDY: Watching Only Fox News Makes You Less Informed Than Watching No News At All

A study finds that watching Fox News may leave viewers less informed than not watching news at all, raising concerns about media influence.

@Green_Footballs AMEN! I love those comedians. They have a way of informing the public with humor.
