Here’s what I’m working on at the moment: a 32 #Tetrodes “hyperdrive” for bilateral hippocampal recordings. It’s a prototype - I’ll let you know if it works...🤞
@elduvelle We're worried about the rats to be honest.
@cowboycatranch oh no! They’re totally fine with it (also it looks much better finished)
@elduvelle Do you have to make these yourself? Are they only stuck to the skin, not perforating the skull?

@cowboycatranch I make them myself yes… these ones take about a week to make, but I’m still optimizing the building process.

The goal is to put some very small recording wires in a specific brain region, so I open a small window (craniotomy) in the skull above the region of interest and insert the wires there. I also insert a few small screws in other places of the skull and then cement the bottom part of the implant to the skull and screws. It’s all done under anaesthesia of course, and the rats get painkillers during it and for several days afterwards.

@elduvelle Sorry, but that sounds horrible.
@cowboycatranch No worries.. It is a surgery after all. I’m not sure if it makes it better for you but people do similar ones on humans too, when access to the brain is needed for medical reasons.
