No how matter how the AI saga ends, the status quo will remain the same-- power will still be in the hands of the few.

@upol a serious question (and I know, I'm kinda looking at tech solutions for soc problems again, but still curious):

has there been any research into distributed training of very large CNNs? Something like Mastodon, but for AI training? I feel like this _could_ be an alternative to the power concentration you mentioned.

@floe @upol Yeah many works but it didn’t really take off.

@amirrahnama @floe similar to challenges of Mastodon (e.g., Masto is mostly Global North, mostly W.E.I.R.D), despite tech decentralization, resource gaps create disparities. That being said, the tech decentralization could be one piece of the larger puzzle. The problems are sociotechnical; so must the solutions be.
