I have just explained to my wife ( @virtuosew ) a maths thing that's easily within reach of pretty much anyone's understanding, and she summarised it as:

Burble burble burble ... more burble, then burble some more, and ...

TA-DAH !!!

Thing is ... she's not wrong. I can see no idea at all why this is true.

The conjecture is not mine, and I don't have permission to share it, but it's just bonkers.

Utterly bonkers.

I need to go to bed.

I thought pretty much all wives reacted that way to our interests that are not also one of their core interests, and they just humor us a lot.

@dougmerritt Thing is, this conjecture is really easy to explain, and she was following along quite happily. Then once I had enough to state the conjecture she did a huge double-take and came out with exactly the right reaction.

It's just crazy.

Well that's all very intriguing. See if you can get permission to share it, then!

@ColinTheMathmo @virtuosew let me guess… the monty hall problem.
@ColinTheMathmo @virtuosew I think it is entirely wrongheaded to assume that maths is within the reach of everybody. My son has dyscalculia and really struggled, although he did achieve a GCSE. It enrages me that the blame for not being able to do maths is placed on the people who are struggling. It should not be forced down everyone’s throats the way our current PM wants it to be. rant over.
