The UK Met Office isn't a commercial company, it's state-owned. Why are they doing this? 🤔
@FediThing I guess they use the advertising revenue to help cover its costs. Maybe it’s worth paying the £2.99 to remove the adverts https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/what/met-office-weather-app there is an option to opt out of the data sharing but requires a few extra clicks. The number of people the data is shared with alarmed me
@FediThing There is a wider issue of UK public bodies and Council websites just signing up to sone third party advertising scheme with terrible data-sharing consequences. I guess they're just looking at money and see it as an easy way of reducing costs, without wanting to pry too deeply in case it ruins the arrangement?
@FediThing Yes that’s likely it with cuts to funding they look to ways to support services via monetisation of people’s data for targeted adverts.
