He was assigned Michael at birth, I was wondering if he was Miguel.
I would have preferred Clemente (or even Alomar or Delgado).
Redeeming factor: Mike did it from the bottom of the order.
The wasp-y name reminded me of seeing an image of an early-career baseball card of “Bob” Clemente and starting to realize how easy it is to whitewash a situation. My memory—back to about 1970—was always of Roberto Clemente.
Then in the 1980’s I read a story about Willie Hernandez. He was teaching his son to be proud of his Latino heritage.
Out the mouths of babes, wisdom: the son replied, “then how come you go by ‘Willie’?”
Kid has a point.
So from then on, Willie became Guillermo Hernandez.
