OpenAI announces leadership transition

Chief technology officer Mira Murati appointed interim CEO to lead OpenAI; Sam Altman departs the company. Search process underway to identify permanent successor.

@clive yeah - I mean - not even in the board? What could be going on?

@debs

I'm wondering if it's financial ... like, had he blown far more of their investment capital and not reported it adequately or something?

Or maybe it's interpersonal

I've no idea really

@clive yeah - just wondering out loud - like we do 😜

@debs

THAT'S WHAT SOCIAL NETWORKING IS FOR

@clive no, it’s to SCREAM at people who don’t agree with you that YOU’RE WRONG!

[slap]

wait, lost myself for a second, ok I’m back]

@debs

😂

@clive and seriously - I went down a rabbit hole past few weeks on IG and broke all my rules [granted from a place of deep passion and trauma]

Such a relief to come back here and find the only trending items and fights are about AI and Ad targeting

@clive well he’s MSFT issue now ;)

@debs

It's been quite a NEWS WEEKEND

@clive did ChatGPT make this decision and write this announcement I wonder?

@CyberMat75

lol yes

@clive apparently they are considering reinstating him now. Chat GPT5 must have overridden Chat GPT4’s decisions from yesterday
@clive The big question I’ve had is how, knowing how they built their massive trove of source material for OpenAI’s LLM and not with permission could they (and Microsoft prior) claim to back any lawsuit against it around claims of copyright infringement or IP infringements. That is a goods way to lose and insane amount of money.

@vanderwal

Yep, the VC world in AI has openly admitted that should they been required to pay for access to all those training materials, they can't afford to do what they're doing -- at least not at the scale they're doing it

But I doubt that's what he's getting deposed over -- those risks had been well-known for a while, affect all other makers of LLMs, and it isn't clear the copyright case will be strong enough to win in court ...

I could be wrong, but I suspect the issue is elsewhere

@clive It was one of two hunches.

None of the VCs I know have put much in AI and they also sat out digital coin (but in on some “distributed ledger that is sustainable”). I had a gap in knowledge with the hunch I stated.

@clive Reading the OpenAI announcement again and seeing Greg Brockman removed as chairman and off the board completely, but still president reporting to the CEO.

The other thing that jumped out is how internal the board is. Most are from OpenAI and it is a small board. Not sure if the full board wasn’t listed.

@vanderwal

Yeah, I noticed both those two things also -- very interesting

@clive @vanderwal so it smells like lying about the data then, and not the usual harassment or sexual misconduct.

@sladner @vanderwal

I guess it certainly *could* be one of those, too!

I've genuinely no solid read on this

@clive @vanderwal I am hoping we will get more details
@clive Oh, the shadenfruede. It's really rather delicious.

@sarawinge

Can you *imagine* the chaos

@clive Disappointed in this news. I was REALLY hoping it was "Finding itself intellectually superior to human beings. ChatGPT has appointed itself as CEO of OpenAI".

@clive He apparently defended himself by saying "I wasn't lying, they were hallucinations because I was using chatGPT to decide things to say to the board"

</joke>

@clive Musk used to be involved. And then there was that weird interval not so long ago when Musk joined in the call to halt AI research 6 months -- when he clearly didn't.

You have to wonder not if but how he's manipulating whatever he can in the AI space.
